Garmin Edge 305 error message "USB device not recognized"

I was getting this error message when I plugged in my Garmin USB data cable. Here is some other information you should know about my situation;
1. I was getting the message even if my Edge 305 was not connected to the data cable.
2. I was not able to upload workouts to the Garmin Training Center after the message appeared.
3. I borrowed a data cable from my son's camera and it worked fine on my Edge 305.
4. I bought a new Garmin cable for about $12.95 plus shipping and that solved the problem. The SKU is 010-10723-01.
5. I read several blogs from people who were also getting the "USB device not recognized" message and there is more than one cause of the problem and hence the solution that worked for me may not work for you.
